Just the Facts
“The issue before us is not whether to denounce the statements,” Chief Justice Roberts wrote. “It is instead the significance of those statements in reviewing a presidential directive, neutral on its face, addressing a matter within the core of executive responsibility.” “In doing so,” he wrote, “we must consider not only the statements of a particular president, but also the authority of the presidency itself.”
In other words, the Supreme Court chooses to respect the office of the president - that we can’t worry about the statements around this sensitive issue, but just the “facts.” The facts are simple. No human being is illegal and we should live in a world where your religion does not define you. They can wrap this Muslim ban in a pretty bow and call it a travel ban, but we all know what it is. Let me be clear, I am vehemently opposed to this Muslim ban and I’m vehemently opposed to the separation and mistreatment of families at the border. But, I couldn’t help but think, what if we all reacted as strongly to child sex abusers? Trump isn’t doing everything is his power to protect children. In fact the reports from the detention centers say that sexual abuse is occurring at this very minute. It baffles me that we live in a country where a person can be turned away if they’re from Yemen, but a Roman Catholic priest from Baltimore, MD can sexually abuse numerous children and then be dropped off in Syracuse, NY or Ogdensburg, NY to keep abusing. Why do we have “safe houses” for priests who sexually abuse children? Why don’t we have safe houses for refugees and children and PEOPLE in need?
If New York State for example just looked at the facts, one in four girls are sexually abused before their 18th birthday and one in six boys are abused before their 18th birthday. Would New York State feel moved to change the statute of limitations law then? If we’re not going to muddy the waters with rhetoric and worrying about the Roman Catholic Church or the Boy Scouts of America I’d say the decision is pretty easy and pretty clear.
